In July 2021, we met Anaïs Reymond, a graduate of the Bachelor of Law program in Valence, who chaired the Valence student association CODE (Comité d’Organisation D’événements Étudiants, or Student Events Organizing Committee) in 2020–2021.
Why did you join CODE?
I joined the association in my first year of college. At first, I joined CODE to meet new people, especially third-year students who could give me advice about my studies. Over the years, I became more involved and eventually became president.
What is the purpose of CODE?
CODE is an association that was created in 2017 for students. One of its main objectives is to enable them to connect with various stakeholders, including teachers, professionals, associations, etc. It also provides them with knowledge that complements their law studies.
What events are organized by CODE?
The most important annual event organized by CODE is the Legal Careers Forum, which lasts half a day. On this occasion, professionals from all legal backgrounds come to talk about their jobs. Students from the Faculty are present, as well as high school students who want to learn about law. This year, due to Covid, we organized a virtual version of the Forum by regularly posting interviews with professionals on our Instagram account.
We also organize many conferences. Depending on the topic, if it is particularly topical, these are very successful! For example, we organized a conference on domestic violence that was very well received.
During the past academic year, we planned to diversify the formats of our events so that we wouldn't only offer lectures, as students already spend a lot of time in lecture halls. For example, we had planned a visit to the court, but this couldn't go ahead due to the health crisis.
How have you adapted your events to health restrictions?
We had to revise our program to interact with students virtually. For example, we decided to post one legal news item per week on our Instagram account. We also participated in Environment Week on social media, in partnership with other associations in Valencia, to promote the same cause together.
We also successfully organized two videoconferences in partnership with the Valencia Bar Association to present the various legal professions. Both events were very successful and we received good press coverage!
Does the association benefit from partnerships?
We work with the Bar Association and several associations in Valence, but nothing has been formalized. We also have the support of the Grenoble Law School and, in particular, teachers who help us organize our events and promote our association. The Law School also provides us with an annual grant.
What has CODE brought you personally?
I met lots of students and professionals. What's more, teamwork is a real bonus in law studies, where students can sometimes feel a little isolated.
My experience as president has also taught me how to manage a team and develop new skills, particularly in communication.
I also discovered many different careers thanks to CODE, which helped me decide on my future path, namely to become an administrative judge, although I may still change my mind!
How do you become a member of CODE?
This association is open to all law and economics students, even though most of its activities are law-oriented. We welcome anyone who wants to get involved in faculty life, become more engaged in their studies, or who is motivated and enjoys meeting new people: that's what associations are perfect for!
I noticed that at the beginning of the year, students are hesitant to get involved in the association because they are afraid of the commitment it will require. It is important to note that each member of CODE is free to contribute as much time as they can spare to the association. There is no pressure. The important thing for us is always to put studies first. That said, the more members there are in the association, the easier it is to divide up the tasks. So I hope that the new board, chaired by Ayline Yigit, will welcome many volunteers!
