On Wednesday, February 19, a theater and discussion event was held on the university campus (EST building), organized by the Law School , the CRJ, the CERDAP2, and the UGA Office of Culture and Scientific Culture.
On this occasion, the play JUSTICE, written in 2018 by Samantha Markowik and directed by the Compagnie Les Jeanne, was performed by three actresses: Julie Fontana, Nathalie Gröll, and Agathe Petrini.
The idea to involve the Law School, through the Master’s program in Criminal Law and Criminal Sciences led by Anne-Gaëlle Robert, came from the actresses who, having performed at the Grenoble Courthouse, had noticed the need to answer questions from the audience after the play.
The play engages the audience through its many short scenes depicting face-to-face encounters in the Criminal Court, just before summary trials (expedited justice). The actresses take turns playing the roles of all the characters, offering multiple perspectives: the defendant, the assistant district attorney, the police officer, the judge, the psychologist... The audience can easily put themselves in the characters’ shoes, identifying with them to understand each person’s reasoning.
This event also reflects a desire to open up the University and the judicial world to the public by offering an event accessible to all. The discussion thus gave attendees the opportunity to engage with representatives of the judiciary who preside over these summary trials: Catherine Lanza-Perret, President of the Grenoble Criminal Court; Federico Steinmann, Attorney at the Grenoble Bar; and Marianne Thirard, Deputy Public Prosecutor at the Grenoble Judicial Court.
With a packed house and a lively closing discussion, this event was a resounding success!
