Spotlight on the Faculty's high-level student athletes

High-level sport
In 2023-2024, the Faculty has 18 high-level student athletes (SHN), including 14 in distance learning and 4 in face-to-face learning.

To better understand the specifics of this status, we spoke with Alexandre Delmotte, the SHN advisor for the Law School. We also profiled several SHN students who are excelling in their respective fields.

3 Questions for Alexandre Delmotte, SHN Liaison for the Law School

1/ How does one obtain SHN status?

High-level athlete status can be obtained in two ways:
  • Either by being registered on the Ministry of Youth and Sports' list of high-level athletes or by having a contract with a professional club's training center. Access to SHN status is then automatic, i.e., it is automatically granted to students who apply for it (the University has no say in the matter).
  • Either by submitting an application to the UGA's Special Needs Services Department (SPBS). The application is then reviewed by a committee, which approves or rejects the status, based in particular on sporting performance criteria.

2/ Do SHN students study in person or remotely?

Both are possible.
Balancing sports and in-person classes requires students to be able to manage their training schedule. Classes must be attended regularly and attendance at tutorials is monitored. However, it is possible to change tutorial or lecture groups for reasons of compatibility with training schedules, or to grant an exemption from tutorials. It is also possible to set up alternative exam sessions, or even to organize remote exams if the conditions are right.
Distance learning is reserved for athletes who are unable to balance their sports commitments with on-campus studies, either because they play abroad or for a professional team that requires a high level of availability. The Law School offers Law School distance learning programs ranging from bachelor’s to master’s degrees. The same accommodations available for on-campus students are available for exams.

3/ What new measures has the Law School implemented this year Law School SHN students?

For several years now, the Law School, in collaboration with UGA, has been strengthening its support for students on extended study plans. This year, for the first time, the School is offering an academic agreement that allows students to spread out their coursework over two years without having to repeat a year. Students who choose to complete their academic year over two years will thus be able to determine which courses they believe they can pass during the first year and which they wish to pass the following year. The review will take place at the end of the second year.
All of the programs offered by the Faculty aim to give high-level student athletes the opportunity to perform in their discipline while building up their academic qualifications to better secure their future. It is also a source of great pride to support students who excel on the national or international sporting stage as well as in their studies.
