At the gallows or at the city gates: the public display of executed bodies in Grenoble in the 16th century
Historical lecture by Éric SYSSAU, archivist.
Building on the recent discovery of archaeological remains of a royal gallows beneath the Esplanade, this lecture explores a forgotten practice: the public display, following execution, of the bodies of those condemned to death. Drawing on the archives of the Parliament of Grenoble and cross-referencing them with contemporary accounts, discover this spectacular manifestation of criminal justice under the Ancien Régime.
