Interview: Jean-Michel Do Carmo Silva, law professor at Grenoble School of Management
Training, Partnerships
As part of a partnership established six years ago, the Faculty of Law and Grenoble École de Management (GEM) offer their students a dual degree in law and management. Each year, around 40 GEM students take a distance learning course in law at the L3 or M1 level, while around 15 students from the Faculty of Law enroll in the program offered by the business school during their M2. We met with Jean-Michel Do Carmo Silva, law professor at Grenoble École de Management and Vice President of the French Law and Management Association, to discuss the "Law and Management" program offered to students at the Grenoble Faculty of Law.
What program is open to law students as part of the partnership with GEM?
Law students follow the traditional Grande École Program (PGE) in French, with the only restriction being that they cannot participate in exchange programs at foreign universities.
Are the courses they take the same as those offered to GEM students?
Law students enter their second year at GEM, which is equivalent to an M1 level. They therefore take the second and third years of the PGE in order to obtain their degree.
During the first semester of the second year at GEM (Bac+4), law students take a refresher course consisting of core courses from the first year (specifically designed for them) and second year (common to all students starting the PGE directly in the second year). In the second semester of this second year, law students are then mixed with all GEM students and take specialized courses of their choice. They have access to all courses except law modules.
In the third year at GEM (Bac+5), law students take distance learning courses from the first semester core curriculum spread over one year.
What are the selection criteria for law students?
The Faculty of Law pre-selects candidates based on their applications. The final selection is made on the basis of an oral interview by GEM and the Faculty of Law, which select a maximum of 15 students. Students who have completed their M1 elsewhere than in Grenoble may apply for this program, provided they are enrolled in M2 at the Faculty of Law in Grenoble. All law specializations are accepted. The oral assessment lasts 20 minutes and focuses on three points: the consistency of the student's chosen course with their career plans, their ability to handle a heavy workload (commitments outside the Faculty may be an indication of this ability), and their interest in economics (current events).
What level of foreign language proficiency is required to enroll in this program?
Students must have a good level of proficiency in their first and second foreign languages (expected level: B1-B2). If a student's level in their second foreign language is average, they will need to compensate for this with strong motivation during their oral interview.
Is international experience essential to obtain a GEM degree?
Yes. This can be an internship or a business start-up. The business school assists students by providing them with internship opportunities and advising them on their career plans. All destinations are possible.
What is the success rate and what are the challenges of the "Law and Management" program?
The success rate for this program is 100%. It is often difficult for law students to identify the management science subjects that best suit their plans when choosing their specialization courses. In addition, the workload is very heavy in this program.
Are there any tuition fees to pay to GEM to follow this program?
No, students do not pay tuition fees at GEM, which is very attractive for them.
In your opinion, what are the advantages of this double degree?
The first advantage is employability. When they graduate from GEM, students often already have a job or find one very quickly. The salary level is also better when you graduate from a business school. Finally, this dual skill set allows students to transform their ambitions as they become aware of their capabilities. The academic level of the students selected for this program is very good, as they take on a heavy workload.
